History
Angelos Mission Ensemble (AME) is a New Jersey based Christian chamber music program developed to nurture and train young string musicians in leadership, character building, and musicianship. Every year, for 8-10 weeks beginning from the end of October to mid December, students from age 10 to 18 learn from a structured themed curriculum taught by critically acclaimed professional musicians. Each season culminates with public concerts in venues such as local hospitals and nursing homes.Cellist Soo Bae and her father and mother Seung Soon and Min Ja Bae founded AME in 2004 as the fulfillment of a vision they had of establishing a local mission center dedicated for the training and cultivation of the next generation of Christian musical leaders. This vision comprises of two equal parts, one raising the student's Spiritual awareness, and the other raising the student's Musical awareness. Through group exercises and one-on-one coaching, each student will be encouraged to explore his or her relationship with God, will be led in prayer exercises weekly, will be challenged to expand his or her breadth of character, will gain experience in group leadership, and will be musically challenged according to his or her level to greater virtuosity. These exercises are provided in order to teach students that music is gift created by the Creator, and prayerfully directed music can be used to build the local community, to build leadership and to glorify God.
Currently AME has just completed its 5th season, "Understanding Heart", which finished on December 15, 2007. In this season for example, one of the exercises was to challenge each student to reach a new "understanding" with his or her parents. Each student was to do his or her homework before their parents would remind them to do it. Each student was also to practice his or her instrument before their parents would remind them. Meanwhile, AME staff informed each parent of the exercise and encouraged the parents to relax and observe for any changes in their child's studying and practicing habits. After a week, in each case every student was able to reach an understanding with their parents and earn their trust with studying and practicing responsibilities. One example of a musical exercise was in coaching members of a string quartet how to yield the 'solo' to any player regardless of how the music was written. A musical passage would be repeatedly played, once with the cello as the focus, the next wi th the 2nd violin as the focus and so on. At the conclusion, each player was able to better appreciate and understand the subtleties of the other player's instrument, and more importantly, how to listen to one another during performance.
Future developments planned for AME include expansion to satellite locations in NYC and other locations, and the inclusion of other instruction such as piano, voice (choir)
The Word "Angelos" drives from Greek and means "Messenger" AME's mission is to support and nurture the Musical Messengers of the next generation! Isaiah 55:12 "For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Psalm 150:6Mission
AME's mission is to provide a supportive environment where each student's musical and spiritual development is encouraged through chamber music and in-depth discussion. Through positive interactions, chamber music reinforces values such as responsibility, leadership, cooperation, collaboration and harmony. Our purpose is to nurture each student in a way that enables them to develop technical and musical ability in order to freely express themselves in praising God.
