Canadian Korean cellist Soo Bae, was recently praised by The New Yorker as “superb” and by The Strad, for being “rich and romantic with crisp incisive technique” Recently honored as the musician of the month in Musical America Magazine, Ms. Bae is also a winner of the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. In 2006, the Canada Council of the Arts awarded her First Prize in its Instrument Bank Competition, resulting in a three-year loan of the ca. 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello. Earlier that same year, she became the first Canadian ever to win a prize at the Adam International Cello Festival & Competition in New Zealand. In September 2009, her passion and dedication in spreading the joy of music was recognized at the Juilliard School with The McGraw-Hills Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach.
Recent concerto engagements in the US featured Soo Bae as guest soloist with the Tacoma Symphony, Minnesota Sinfonia, University of Chicago Symphony, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Scottsdale Symphony, Ohio Valley Symphony, and in her native Canada, the National Arts Center Orchestra, Orchestra London, Oakville Symphony, Kingston Symphony, Korean Canadian Symphony and Sinfonia Toronto. International concerto highlights include the Christchurch Symphony in New Zealand, and she was also featured soloist with the Asian Youth Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations under the baton of Okko Kamu. Commencing at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, this eight concert tour included performances in Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo.
Since her debut with the Korean Canadian Symphony at age eleven, Ms. Bae has performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and the US, including a debut recital at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. In addition, she was featured soloist for the closing ceremony of the Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, where she performed on Casals’ own instrument. In the orchestral circuit, Ms. Bae has been invited as the guest principal cellist to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnisota.
An avid chamber musician, Ms. Bae has collaborated with celebrated artists such Richard Goode, Charles Neidich, Lynn Harrell, Joel Smirnoff, Michael Tree, Mitsuko Uchida, Arnold Steinhardt, David Soyer, Peter Wiley among others. She has also toured with “Musicians from Marlboro” appearing in numerous chamber music festivals including Marlboro, Yellow Barn, Amelia Island Music Festival, Sarasota, Orford and Verbier. Thriving on innovative collaborations, Ms. Bae has also recently performed and recorded with violinist/composer Mark O’Connor and jazz clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera. As a supporter of new music, Ms. Bae has commissioned and premiered new solo cello works especially written for her by such renowned composers as Huang Ruo, David Ludwig and Zou Tian.
Soo Bae recently released her solo CD for the Naxos label featuring all solo works for the cello, including the twelve solo caprices by Alfredo Piatti, of which these works often stand in parallel to Paganini’s 24 Caprices for violin. Upon release, she received rave reviews for her ‘staggering display of technical brilliance and outstanding range of expression’ and in having the ‘ability to transform these works, often thought of as nothing more than etudes, into fulfilling musical jewels’.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Soo Bae began her cello studies at the age of six and moved to Toronto two years later, where she enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She received her Bachelor of Music from The Curtis Institute of Music under Orlando Cole and Master of Music Degree and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School where she served as assistant faculty under Joel Krosnick for 4 years. She has also studied with Harvey Shapiro, Tim Eddy, David Soyer and Peter Wiley.
Intensely involved in teaching, Ms. Bae has given master classes around the globe and has been asked to judge for various competitions including the recent Juilliard Pre-College Concerto Competition. Ms. Bae currently teaches at Gracias Music at Mahanaim and directs Angelos Mission Ensemble Chamber Music Program in New Jersey of which she is founder and director.
For this virtuosic compendium of angular melodies and effects that suggested sirens, march rhythms and a touch of Messiaen, Bae shrugged off the piece’s difficulties and emphasized its shapeliness and warmth.

Hymn Arrangements
One of my passions is to arrange solo cello music using melodies from my favorite hymns and spiritual songs. These songs have helped and encouraged me in times of challenges and also times of joy. It is my way of celebrating God and all the wonderful things He has done in my life. As I continue to perform them in many different settings, my hope is to record all of them and publish the sheet music as well so cellists all over the world can also use it to worship.

Walk 132
Walk 132 is a guitar/voice and cello duo formed in 2006 with Dr Jason Suh who is an oncologist in profession but also happens to be an incredible musician. Jason began his piano studies at age six and later went on to double major in Biology and Music Theory and Composition at the University of Pennsylvania, earning both B.A. degrees. Since, he has served in various different musical settings wearing many hats from accapella director, praise band leader to song writing and arranging musics. Our duo started as a fun jamming session during our engagement period and has grown over the years to an important part of our marriage!

Tchaikovsky "Variations on a Rococo Theme" for Cello and Orchestra, Part 2
I pursued this project with the intention of facing new challenges that was going to stretch me to a different level. The album was recorded in the span of 3 consecutive days and the experience certainly fulfilled its goal. Even though these works are technically very demanding, they are incredibly beautiful little musical jewels, each number exploring different characters and emotions. I have learned so much from this whole process and am very proud of the final result.
This album came together as part of the Musicians From Marlboro touring program which was created as an extension of Vermont’s Marlboro Music Festival. It was a rewarding experience to have performed and toured with incredible musicians such as Soovin Kim (violin), Jessica Lee (violin), and Jonathan Vinocour (viola). The cherry on top of this wonderful journey is that one of our live performances was recorded and produced into this CD!
This is my very first CD and it is a journey through different live performances in my musical career. I have titled the album 'Bonjour' in honor of the 1696 Stradivarius 'Bonjour' cello which was generously loaned to me for 3 years at that time by an anonymous donor through the Canada Council of the Arts.
최 근 배수령은 미국에서는 타코마 심포니(Tacoma Symphony), 미네소타 신포니아(Minnesota Sinfonia), 시카고 대학교 심포니(University of Chicago Symphony), 뉴햄프셔 뮤직 페스티벌 오케스트라(New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra), 스캇데일 심포니(Scottsdale Symphony), 오하이오 벨리 심포니(Ohio Valley Symphony) 등과 협연했으면, 그녀의 고국인 캐나다에서는 캐나다 내셔날 아트센터 오케스트라(the National Arts Center Orchestra), 런던 오케스트라(Orchestra London), 오크빌 심포니(Oakville Symphony), 킹스톤 심포니(Kingston Symphony), 캐나다 한인 심포니(Korean Canadian Symphony), 토론토 신포니아(Sinfonia Toronto) 등과 협연했다.
